Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is the third largest and most scenic of the Canary Islands. Sometimes called a "miniature continent" because of its varied climates and landscapes, it has endless sandy beaches in the south and east, and rocky and mountainous interiors with lush green vegetation in the north and west.

The whole island is smaller than Tenerife and Fuerteventura, but is home to 800,000 people, or half the entire population of the Canary Islands.

The island capital, the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, lies in the north, and has a vibrant city life, famous for its annual Carnaval. Most tourists, however, prefer to stay in the southern part of the island, particularly around Maspalomas, famous for its sand dunes and warm, sunny climate.

Because of its superb climate and the diversity of its natural features, it is one of the most popular year-round destinations in the world, with an estimated 2.2 million visitors every year.
