Barcelona
Capital of the autonomous region of Catalonia in Northeastern Spain, the city of Barcelona is undeniably one of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations.
A major Mediterranean port, it sits on a plain that rises from the sea to wooded hills and a densely-packed urban centre. Influenced by neighboring France and by the migrants who have knocked on its doors from all over, Barcelona boasts a lively and eclectic culture, rich in nuances that are at once old and new.
It is home to the best collection of Pablo Picasso and Joan Miro’s works and Antoni Gaudi’s modernista architecture, and can perhaps claim to be Spain’s most stylish city. The 1992 Olympics gave Barcelona the world spotlight, making it and its culture of entertainment, prosperity, and tourism a household name.
The bigger province of Barcelona is one of the four Catalan provinces, and its coastline runs from the Southern end of the Costa Brava to the Northern end of Costa Dorada.
